Building a Better Communication Platform for Construction and Industrial Trades — Part 4

There are many ways that construction and industrial trade companies can create new efficiencies. Employing lean methodology, streamlining supply chains, and hiring competent and self-motivated team players for onsite and offsite roles can help elevate efficiency and effectiveness and eliminate common wastes (which we explored in depth in a previous series of articles, starting with this one).

Yet as beneficial as such improvements can be, the lowest hanging fruit in both the industrial trades and the construction industry is removing the communication roadblocks that hamper productivity, stifle collaboration, and keep information and personnel stuck in walled silos that hinder rapid task completion and make it more likely that a project will run past its deadline and over its initial budget. In this concluding installment of our latest four-part blog series, we’ll highlight how a familiar interface and simplistic user experience make it easy for even the least tech-savvy workers to get up and running quickly with a consolidated, industrial-grade communication platform like Hivot.

Making Usability a Top Priority

In the end, it doesn’t really matter how fancy an app’s features are or how many sexy new technologies it incorporates (think AI, virtual reality, and so on). None of this matters if the tool is so complicated and clunky that it actually hinders staff members’ productivity instead of helping them work faster and smarter. A company might make a significant financial investment in a shiny new tool, only to find that it goes largely unused. In which case, that money and the time wasted during fact-finding, beta testing, and deployment of it comes to nothing and the implementation will inevitably fail.

We kept such considerations in mind when building Hivot’s flexible architecture from a user-centric point of view that carefully considered the challenges currently faced by both onsite and offsite workers in construction and the industrial trades. We then solicited feedback from experts in the field on how to solve these problems, and then came up with robust yet intuitive solutions that we rigorously tested in real-life use cases before releasing the final, consumer-facing version of the platform.

Encouraging Greater User Engagement and More Streamlined Communication + Project Management

This patient and deliberate development cycle led to our team combining common user workflows with a familiar and simplistic user interface that every worker – even those who would consider themselves to be technologically challenged – has used before on other platforms for both personal and professional communication purposes. We sought to give onsite and offsite workers convenient access to powerful, versatile and robust features without the usual steep learning curve that they have likely struggled with when trying to master the nine different apps that the average person in the industrial trades and construction industry use.

The ability for any authorized user to assign tasks and project management milestones to the right people in the right location at the right time empowers workers at all levels to make information readily accessible, easily understandable, and immediately actionable. This way, tasks get completed quickly, updates get made effectively, and project phases are advanced rapidly without the usual delays and wastes that plague project managers everywhere.

Consolidating their communications with Hivot enables workers in all roles and specialties to engage productively and openly with the right stakeholders and experts. Putting all communication, to-do items, and status notifications behind a single point of glass makes messaging and project management clearer than ever before and gives workers the ability to get the answers they need precisely when they need them. Open and read receipts remove the excuse that a recipient didn’t see a certain message and so didn’t take action, increasing accountability and ensuring that the necessary work is done in a timely fashion. With Hivot, construction and industrial trade organizations enjoy a faster on ramp, greater user adoption and engagement, and quicker ROI.
